Hello everyone! This is the first post in a series of articles that will be sharing a brief overview of the four books of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There are many professing to be followers of Jesus Christ. This series and study is to help the Believer and Follower of Jesus the Christ get to know their Savior and Lord. The four Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke and John expound on the birth and ministry of Jesus Christ during his 33 or so years here on earth. The Gospels are written from the viewpoint of four disciples of Jesus Christ and their individual views are a blessing to the reader as we learn more about our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ and his Ministry.
Matthew begins his Gospel with the genealogy of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is his name, Jesus meaning “Savior” and Christ meaning “Messiah” or “Anointed.” “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Matthew 1:1 Matthew connects Jesus to his royal heritage by tracing his ancestry back to King David, through the line of Davidic kings. Joseph the husband of Mary was Jesus’ legal father and the one through whom he had a right to David’s throne. Joseph, was legally but not physically the father of Jesus.
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.” Matthew 1:18-25
